After a shooting Monday at North Carolina at Chapel Hill that shut down the campus for three hours and prompted urgent warnings for students to seek shelter, a faculty member was dead and a suspect was in custody.
In spite of the fact that classes began a week ago, the shooting led to a sense of terror and an eerie quiet on campus during what is normally an exciting and joyful time of year.
At an afternoon news conference, Kevin M. Guskiewicz, UNC-Chapel Hill’s chancellor, said, “This is a tragic day for our campus community.”
The identity of the suspect has not been disclosed by officials as charges have not yet been filed. Similarly, the name of the victim has also been withheld as authorities are in the process of notifying their next of kin.
During the news conference, UNC Police Chief Brian James reported that the initial report of a shooting at Caudill Labs, a facility specializing in chemistry and situated in a central location, was received at 1:02 p.m. via a call to 911.
