Geographical Indication (GI Tag-2023)

A Geograpical Indication defined as the certain specific products which contain the special unique charactaristics and reputaion of the specific particular area. and this Geographical indication tag gives the intellectual property rights to the specific products with their Geographical origin. No one can use the products rights after the taking permission from the origin of the real GI indication.

An entrepreneur or a group of businesspeople from a specific region, state, or nation are issued a Geographical Indication (GI) label if they produce items of exceptional quality. The Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act of 1999 governs the issuance of these tags. However, it went into effect on September 15, 2003. The government unveiled four new GI tags in the year 2019.

India’s top 5 states with the most GI tags are Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Kerala. The states with the most GI tags are Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, followed by Kerala with 35, Uttar Pradesh with 34, and Maharashtra with 31.

The main purpose of the GI Tag:-

The main and important aim to be implement of this GI Tag to protect the unauthorized use of another unregistered manufactures and sellers of the GI Tag products. and to prevent the piracy of the GI Tag products.

It offers a manufacturer of distinctive items coming from a specific region of the country legal security.
The GI tag also enables buyers to obtain products of the highest caliber according to their preferences.
Authenticity is guaranteed by the GI tag. A GI Tag on a manufacturer’s product is a sign that the goods they are producing are authentic.

By increasing product demand on both the domestic and foreign markets, it also strengthens and furthers the reputation of the companies who produce GI tag goods.
