25 Years Later, Super Smash Bros. Is Bigger Than Ever.

Nintendo underwent a significant transformation 25 years ago when Mario and Pikachu engaged in their first official, Nintendo-sanctioned battle. This wasn’t just a mere playground game or doodles in a notebook; it was a momentous occasion. Today, we commemorate the 25th anniversary of Super Smash Bros. debuting in North America on Nintendo 64, which paved the way for the immensely popular fighting game franchise. As we celebrate Smash’s birthday, let us also ponder the future possibilities for this extraordinary crossover series, following its “ultimate” last entry.

The fact that Nintendo approved a game in which its iconic, family-friendly characters are seen being punched by characters from other companies is still mind-blowing. This decision is particularly unexpected given that the initial concept for Smash 64 did not feature any Nintendo characters. However, when Masahiro Sakurai proposed the inclusion of Nintendo characters, the company surprisingly agreed.

I eagerly anticipated the opportunity to embark on my journey with Smash Bros. A distinct memory from my early years resurfaces, when I was merely five years old, seated in a Target parking lot alongside my mother and sister. My heart was set on acquiring Super Smash Bros. Melee for GameCube, yet there was a hurdle to overcome: Melee held a T for Teen rating, and my kindergarten self was far from reaching my teenage years. My mother dialed my father to seek his opinion on whether it was suitable for me to engage with a game of such rating, and fortunately, he granted his approval. Thus, I extend my gratitude to both my mother and father, as their decision introduced me to a cherished series that continues to captivate me even after two decades.
